The aim is that users from different profiles, i. e. teachers, music students, amateurs and professional music performers in general, will be able to develop their harmonic ear in a progressive manner. In addition, by working with well-known songs that have had a relevant artistic or social influence, the harmonic progression is fixed in a more efficient and lasting way. The musical ear is part of the sense of hearing and, like all senses, it is more attracted to things that are interesting and appealing. Los niveles 1 y 2 de armoníaaplicada.com adopt a synchronous approach to teaching tonal harmony, enabling students to work with all kinds of tonal examples from the very beginning, and gradually including more advanced examples that extend beyond traditional tonality.

The name of this website arises from an extrapolation from the concept of applied research (versus basic research) to the scope of harmony. That is to say, the main objective is that musicians can apply and improve their knowledge about harmony in a practical way, always based on real musical examples.

  • Level 1: Beginner exercises, instantly accessible to anyone who registers for a free account.
  • Level 2: More challenging exercises, directly available to Premium users. Free users can unlock access after correctly completing 30 exercises.
  • Pro Level (Level 3): Considerably more difficult exercises. Free users can access them after completing 150 exercises, including at least 50 from Level 2. Premium users unlock this level after correctly completing 75 exercises.
  • Master Pro Level (Level 4): The most advanced exercises. Free users can access them after completing 200 exercises, with at least 50 from Level 3. Premium users unlock this top level after successfully completing 150 exercises.
How to access exercises?

Register free by simply providing and email address and a username.
Click “Log in” and indicate that you are a new user.

Not at all, once you have registered you will enter into Free Version, where you will be able to work on three exercises per day. Your answers will be recorded in your personal account.

In order to access the Level 2 exercises you have to correctly answer 30 exercises. Why? Because one of the fundamental objectives of appliedharmony.com is that your harmonic ear develops in a more coherent way. For this it is essential to train in a progressive and adequate manner. If you don’t do so, your musical ear can become frustrated and blocked. Furthermore, it will not be able to identify harmonic progressions that it understands accurately and, from there, compare and get to know other more complex harmonic progressions. Even if you have a good harmonic ear or the so-called “absolute pitch”, prior training is essential for your harmonic ear to develop as the specialists who have created this system know it is efficient and effective.

One of the fundamental goals of appliedharmony.com is the musical development of the harmonic ear. Just as no athletics coach would allow you to participate in a half marathon or a marathon without first going through a specific routine of exercises that would prepare your body for what it needs to do, the specialists who have designed this program know that the musical ear needs to be developed progressively. Although you have a Premium version, levels 3 and 4 can be very frustrating if your musical ear has not practiced levels 1 and 2 previously. Even if you are a teacher or you have a well-trained harmonic ear, we consider that this preliminary phase will be advantageous to consolidate your knowledge, improve your speed of response and get to know the way in which the system proposes the exercises. Moreover, if your harmonic ear has already been well-trained, it will not take you much time and effort to reach the minimum number of correct answers that we ask to access levels 3 and 4. In levels 1 and 2, in addition to the non-diatonic Roman numeral notation used by default at all levels of armoniaaplicada.com, you can choose among lead-sheet symbols, uppercase and lowercase Roman numerals and upper case Roman numerals.

When you do not select the correct answer, you will be able to listen to a piano reduction in MP3 of that option, recorded at the same tempo as the original song. When the answer is correct, you will have the option to listen to the reduction of any of the four choices by clicking on the individual play button next to each one. 

In addition to specific ear-training videos designed by Sofía Martínez Villar, you will have access to the first two levels of Sergio Lasuén’s course Armonía aplicada a las músicas populares urbanas.

In addition to the filters available in the Free version, you can select exercises by tonal center and tempo. Furthermore, in Levels 1 and 2 you will be able to filter exercises according to time signature.
